Carers share their thoughts and photos from their short breaks. Their words highlight the power and positivity of taking a break from their caring role.
I started caring for my dad when I was about 5 or 6. I don’t normally go out as much as other kids would. It can be quite hard. I like having breaks from reality sometimes.
We were exhausted, smothered in worries, and had no time for anything or anyone, even each other. The thought of that break gave us something to look forward to, like your favourite dessert at the end of a plate of over-cooked sprouts.
The photo on this page shows a piece of art which was created in celebration of the Short Breaks Scheme and the carers who have benefited from a short break.
With vibrant, bold colours, positive language and imagery of the carers at the centre of the piece, it invites the observer to explore the messages and ethos of the Short Breaks Scheme and shines a light on the vital work that carers do. It was displayed at the inaugural Short Breaks Conference.
Inspired by colour and rhythm, Welsh artist, Chris Pompa, works largely in an abstract and pop art style, often using recycled materials. Drawing on his experience as an arts practitioner in special schools and adult services, Chris captures the positivity of a short break for unpaid carers.
