Challenge Wales’ Broadening Horizons project will offer:
Activities foster social and academic skills and promote wellbeing. The sailing day offers respite from caring duties, enhances mental health through learning skills, and water-based fun. In addition, the sessions provide personal development opportunities. These activities can help foster improved communication skills, and increased knowledge of ocean literacy, geography, English, reading skills, science and maths through our innovative learning programme on the water.
The Sea and Tell session will include a microplastic pick / litter pick.
For the day voyage:
For the shore-side Sea and Tell session:
No experience is required to take part. Young carers must be mobile enough to climb six steps on their own unaided.
Minimum age for day voyage is 14 years
Minimum age for shore-based Sea and Tell session is 11 year old
This project is funded via the Regional Partnership Board - C3SC (Cardiff Third Sector Council) / Cardiff and Vale.
Challenge Wales inspires young people aged 11 – 25 years to broaden their horizons, achieve their potential, develop their life-skills and improve their mental health through transformative outdoor learning on the water. Challenge Wales fosters personal growth through fun and positive support, that encourages inclusiveness, regardless of ability. Activities develop teamwork and communication skills, resilience and self-confidence and an awareness of sustainability and ocean literacy.
To achieve this Challenge Wales offers accredited one day voyages through Agored Cymru (7 hours) onboard its sailing boat Challenge Wales. It involves 3-hour shore-based sessions, learning about living on a boat and bringing STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects to life, without sailing. No sailing experience is required to take part. Challenge Wales is a charity predominantly run by volunteers.
